Finding Your Dream Colours

I have been hosting Christmas for 20 years, and each year I build and tweak my existing decorations and colour schemes. Opening my Christmas boxes (and I have many!) fills me with a warm feeling of nostalgia and a flood of fond memories. But like with any room in our home or items of clothing in our wardrobes, we can grow tired of and uninspired by our collection of decorations. It’s then that you can look to add a few new additions or refresh what you already have to bring more interest and excitement to your Christmas home.

As an interior designer, I have a tried and tested process when designing a room, so you won’t be surprised to hear that my Christmas decorating follows in a similar vein, and it may seem a little more thought through than most! However, there is a method in my madness, and I end up with a creative and cohesive Christmas scheme that my family and I love.

Christmas Colours Palette

We are all familiar with the traditional colours of Christmas: red, green, white, silver and gold, but why restrict yourself to just these? Why not introduce some other colours into your decoration? Start with a core palette of 3 colours and introduce another 3-4 accent colours. This can be in the form of a hint of new colour or a bold injection to complement what you already have. I always tell my clients that it’s not just the colours you use but also the pattern and texture you combine with colour that makes a design scheme come to life.

Christmas Trends

This season’s colour trends I am loving: teal, blues, burgundy, lilacs and all the pinks, including brights and pastels.

It’s fun to be inspired by the latest trends as long as you don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need to get rid of everything and completely start again each year. Whether making a decoration or buying one new, think about how it will fit into what you already have and enhance your overall look.

My family has Scandinavian heritage and so I’ve always been drawn to a Nordic style, with a core colour palette of red, white and winter browns. Still, I love using lots of different colours and am confident in mixing and matching them, and will comfortably introduce pinks and greens alongside soft textures and sparkly finishes.

My top 7 Christmas decorating tips:

  1. Play with height when choosing your decorations to give perspective and create a visually attractive scene.

  2. Form themed areas within your home to create stories and areas of interest. For example,  gather a winter animal scene on a mantlepiece or a vase with foliage and different-height candles as a table centrepiece.

  3. Use a mix of homemade and bought decorations. It keeps memories of past Christmases alive and creates a personal and unique-to-you scheme.

  4. Lights and candles – use twinkly lights generously around your home. Drape them through your tree and houseplants or up and around the walls.

  5. Have lots of candles for soft, flattering light and a cosy feel.

  6. Bring in texture and softness with wool animal decorations or pinecones from the outside.

  7. Ensure you keep any boxes for delicate decorations to repack them away for next year carefully. I have invested in solid, clear boxes with clip-on lids to pack away my decorations safely.
