Find your unique design style.
When it comes to your renovation project, finding your interior style is arguably the most fun yet most daunting step. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with so many design options available, and it can take time to pick a style or feel confident in mixing styles.
Designing your dream room or home becomes easy when you discover your unique style. There’s no need to worry about getting it ‘right’ because your signature style will guide you to make choices that are perfect for you and your home. Unlocking your creativity and finding your style is truly the key here.
So, where should you start to discover your style? I use some reference points with my clients to inspire you on your journey.
Invest in design books and delve into the specific characteristics of a style, or head to magazines, Pinterest, social media or blogs.
Observe the style and details of places you visit, such as restaurants, hotels and art galleries.
Look to nature and all the beautiful things around you. Nature offers the most beautiful colour pairings.
Consider your cultural background and family history. Pull together styles that really represent you.
Notice the details that catch your eye, and take photos or cut out designs that resonate with you. This is where you start formulating your own design style. You can also mix and match design styles, drawing from various influences.
Remember, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to interior design, so have fun and enjoy the process!

Create a ‘motherboard’ for inspiration
I’m sure you’ve heard of a ‘mood board’, but have you heard of a ‘motherboard’?
Designing your dream home is an exciting journey, and creating your 'motherboard' is a fantastic exercise that can help you get started. This overarching visual inspiration board encapsulates everything you and your household love.
Start by developing a descriptive mind map that defines you and those you live with, including your personality traits, design influences, and even the brands and fashion influences you admire. This is a great way to discover new ways to bring your personality into your home.
Once you have your mind map, you can pull it together and create your motherboard. This can feature all of your favourite elements, including important keywords, magazine cutouts, printouts, fabrics or any other element you’d like to include.
This is such a fun, helpful, and invaluable exercise when it comes to designing your home or a room in your home, and it is one I do for every project I work on. It’s meant to inspire you and eliminate any fears you have about the design process.
Your motherboard may change over time and evolve as you do; that’s the beauty of it!
