Stylish ideas to create your perfect boho bedroom
The boho style is still as popular as ever, but how do you make it personal to you within a simple budget?
I have recently finished the ideal boho vibe redesign on my teenage daughter's loft bedroom. With the core furniture in the bedroom remaining, the plan was to change the room's layout creating zones to fit her needs.
The design brief:
Objectives and goals: To create a relaxed environment in a light and spacious loft bedroom for a teenage girl to sleep, do her schoolwork, and hang out with friends. The focus was also to design a room that would last into adulthood.
Overall look: Boho style
Design requirements: Create cosy areas, a place to study, a space for music and singing.
Budget: There was no structural building required in the project, with most of the budget allocated to decorating, paint, furniture and soft furnishings.
Research
Look through magazines, read blogs and search on Pinterest. It is a great way to start and define your vision, bringing in your personality. Brainstorm through a spider diagram some of the critical elements needed to make an idea come alive. Keep tear-outs and print off images of your thoughts and colour pairings to use in creating a mood board of all the design elements, colours, and soft furnishings is useful to get you to start forming a rough colour palette and a useful board to look back to during the project. Please also take a look back at my blog post from last year - How to add some boho-chic to your home for more boho styling inspiration.
Eight key boho aspects to include in your design
1. Use lots of texture - Natural materials and patterns
2. Group cushions - Play with different material, sizes and shapes
3. Soft natural rugs - Layer rugs
4. Handmade or vintage items - Upcycle, repaint or make things
5. Crystals, candles and scents - For rest and relaxation
6. Plants - Use lots of plants to bring the outside in
7. A mix of lighting options - Add side lamps to create ambience
8. Low-level seating areas - Use pouffes, bean bags or large cushions
Creating your Colour scheme
Choose a cohesive colour palette of 3-4 key colours. Use colours, textures and critical boho-inspired pieces to provide a relaxed feeling in the room.
Decide on a colour palette that ties together all of these influences. See above for our chosen colours, these brought depth and warmth to the room. It is a large space, so we used green to bring the outside in, which paired beautifully with the soft terracotta pink and a dove grey to soften all the textures.
Design and detail
My daughter wanted to have white walls, so we brought colour through in the furniture and soft furnishing to bring the room alive. We spent time choosing the white paint, as it is a north-west facing room, therefore it needed warm tones in the white to soften the whole space. We chose Mylands Brilliant white Emulsion. (More on how to choose the right white in next week’s blog!).
