Top 5 colourful lamps and lampshades
The side lamp doesn’t often get the credit it deserves. It is required to solve quite a few requests, add ambience, bring colour, height, and texture, and that’s before choosing the lumens of the light bulb!
As the days draw in, it brings our attention to how we light our homes and how light affects the ambience and colours around a room. I love the change in seasons, closing the curtains, turning on the lights and lighting candles. It brings a sense of calm and the snug hygge feeling that I find so comforting at the end of the day.
Perfecting the light in your home can take some time. You can pick the most beautiful paints and fabrics, but how the light affects a room can change the overall look. There are many things to consider when choosing your lighting.

7 tips to consider when choosing your lighting:
Main switch or lamp switch? You can have the main ceiling lights and sidelights from one switch on the wall. This does cause a decorating disruption to your wall, so it is advisable to include it in your plans when redesigning a room, as you will need to chase the wiring into the plaster of the walls, fill and repaint. It can be a beneficial solution to have balanced, dimmable soft lighting all around the room without having to go around and turn on each light individually.
Level of Light. The light fittings you choose have a maximum wattage and will limit the brightness available; always check how bright they are to avoid disappointment.
Dimmable lights. Certain lights come with a dimmable option giving flexibility in the brightness you might want in certain areas. You will also need to buy dimmable light bulbs for those fittings.
Lamp bases. Heights of your lamps, consider where you are buying your lights for. Is it beside a sofa for extra reading light or to go on a table? Could it be a floor lamp to sweep across, spreading more light or a wall sconce to spread the light upwards? The choice is vast, and easy to make mistakes.
Lampshades. You can have much fun with your lampshades and bring more personality to the room. Consider the shape of the lampshade that suits the style of your home, and the fabrics can be plain or patterned with trimmings and using colours to draw attention to the design.
Ceiling lights. Spotlights or pendant lighting? The many options and opinions on whether you should use spotlights or multiple sidelights can be a minefield. It would help if you decided how much lighting a room needs, as spotlights add instant light to a larger dark area. Also, you can always mix both or make sure your spotlights are dimmable to play with the harshness for the different moods required.
When choosing a lamp base, consider the material to enhance or blend in with the design of your room, natural elements like wood, ceramic or stone, or choose glass or recycled acrylic to bring shine and reflection. Painted lamp bases are great to tie in your colour schemes.
